Students and Lecturers of Fine Arts Study Program Demonstrates Painting in Bhakti Widya Kahuripan

The Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar-Bali held the Bhakti Widya Kahuripan “Cupak Gerantang Anglanglang Dharma” celebration, which took place grandly at Jaba Pura Pasar Agung, Batur Village, Kintamani District, Bangli Regency, on Sunday, March 3, 2024, evening. As part of this event, several lecturers and students from the Fine Arts Program, Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, ISI Denpasar, enlivened the event by conducting painting demonstrations in the audience area of Jaba Pura Pasar Agung. The beauty of the surrounding nature, coupled with the grandeur of Pura Pasar Agung Gunung Batur, and the figures of Cupak Gerantang served as the main source of inspiration for the involved artists.

The painting demonstration was attended by the Rector, Prof. Dr. I Wayan ‘Kun’ Adnyana, SPI Chairman I Made Jodog, M.FA, as well as several prominent lecturers such as Drs. I Made Suparta, M.Hum. Not to forget, talented students such as I Komang Aryawan and I Putu Gede Wahyu Pusaba also took part in this activity.

In response to the importance of this moment, the Rector of ISI Denpasar, Prof. Dr. I Wayan ‘Kun’ Adnyana, stated that painting at Pura Pasar Agung Gunung Batur provides a rare opportunity for students to absorb and appreciate sacred experiences. “In the series of Bhakti Widya Kahuripan events, ISI Denpasar once again demonstrates its strong commitment to exploring the potential of Indonesian art and culture, as well as encouraging students to continue creating by drawing inspiration from the rich cultural values of local wisdom. Institut Seni Indonesia (ISI) Denpasar-Bali menggelar Bhakti Widya Kahuripan “Cupak Gerantang Anglanglang Dharma” yang berlangsung megah di Jaba Pura Pasar Agung, Desa Batur, Kecamatan Kintamani, Kabupaten Bangli, pada Minggu, 3 Maret 2024 malam. Serangkai dengan pergelaran ini, sejumlah dosen dan mahasiswa dari Program Studi Seni Murni, Fakultas Seni Rupa dan Desain, ISI Denpasar, turut meramaikan dengan melaksanakan demonstrasi melukis di area penonton Jaba Pura Pasar Agung. Keindahan alam sekitar, ditambah dengan kemegahan Pura Pasar Agung Gunung Batur, serta tokoh-tokoh Cupak Gerantang menjadi sumber inspirasi utama bagi para seniman yang terlibat.

Demonstrasi melukis diikuti oleh Rektor Prof. Dr. I Wayan ‘Kun’ Adnyana, Ketua SPI I Made Jodog, M.FA, serta beberapa dosen terkemuka seperti Drs. I Made Suparta, M.Hum. Tak ketinggalan, para mahasiswa berbakat seperti I Komang Aryawan dan I Putu Gede Wahyu Pusaba juga turut ambil bagian dalam kegiatan ini.

Menanggapi pentingnya momen ini, Rektor ISI Denpasar, Prof. Dr. I Wayan ‘Kun’ Adnyana, menyatakan bahwa melukis di Pura Pasar Agung Gunung Batur memberikan kesempatan langka bagi mahasiswa untuk meresapi dan menghayati pengalaman sakral. “Dalam rangkaian acara Bhakti Widya Kahuripan ini, ISI Denpasar sekali lagi menunjukkan komitmen kuatnya dalam menggali potensi seni dan budaya Indonesia, serta mendorong para mahasiswa untuk terus berkarya dengan menginspirasi dari kearifan lokal yang kaya akan nilai-nilai budaya. All costumes worn by characters in the dance drama “Cupak Gerantang Anglanglang Dharma” are the work of one of the faculty members of the Fashion Design Study Program at ISI Denpasar, Dr. A.A.Ngr.Anom Mayun K.Tenaya, M.Si. The costumes, consisting of clothing and gelungan headpieces, were specially designed for the 11 characters of the dance drama. The characters include Cupak, Gerantang, Prabu, Putri, Galuh, Banasati, Tuadaya, Penasar, Wijil, Pan Bekung, and Men Bekung.

Dr. A.A.Ngr.Anom Mayun K.Tenaya, M.Si., explained that the costume making process began in January 2024 and was completed by the end of February 2024. These costumes are not only his own work but also involve collaboration with faculty members of the Visual Communication Design Study Program, namely Cokorda Alit Artawan, S.Sn., M.Sn. The collaboration between these two study programs has produced stunning costumes that enrich the visual aspect of the dance drama performance.

Dr. A.A.Ngr.Anom Mayun K.Tenaya, M.Si., explained that they started by conducting in-depth research on the characters and backgrounds of each character in the dance drama. After that, they designed costume concepts that reinforce the identity and personality of each character.

Next, the design team selected materials that matched the desired theme and aesthetics. They considered factors such as comfort for the dancers, durability, and the ability to express body movements freely.

Once the design and materials were decided, the manufacturing process began meticulously. From fabric cutting, hand stitching, to small details such as embellishments and accessories, everything was done with dedication. Collaboration between faculty members of the Fashion Design and Visual Communication Design Programs ensures that each costume not only reflects visual beauty but also conveys a strong narrative.

“The creative process of making costumes for ‘Cupak Gerantang Anglanglang Dharma’ has been an inspiring journey for us. We strive to create costumes that not only enhance visual appearance but also depict the character and profound meaning of each character in the dance drama,” said the faculty member born on March 1, 1968. Kostum yang dipakai oleh tokoh-tokoh dalam sendratari “Cupak Gerantang Anglanglang Dharma” merupakan hasil karya salah satu dosen Prodi Desain Mode ISI Denpasar, yakni Dr. A.A.Ngr.Anom Mayun K.Tenaya, M.Si. Kostum berupa busana dan gelungan (mahkota) dirancang khusus untuk 11 tokoh drama tari tersebut. Tokoh dimaksud, yakni Cupak, Gerantang, Prabu, Putri, Galuh, Banasati, Tuadaya, Penasar, Wijil, Pan Bekung, dan Men Bekung.

Dr. A.A.Ngr.Anom Mayun K.Tenaya, M.Si. menuturkan pembuatan kostum telah digarap sejak bulan Januari 2024 dan rampung akhir Februari 2024. Kostum-kostum ini tidak hanya hasil karyanya sendiri, tetapi juga berkerja sama dengan dosen Prodi Desain Komunikasi Visual, Cokorda Alit Artawan, S.Sn., M.Sn.

Dr. A.A.Ngr.Anom Mayun K.Tenaya, M.Si., menjelaskan bahwa mereka memulai dengan melakukan riset tentang karakter setiap tokoh dalam sendratari tersebut. Lanjut, mereka merancang konsep-konsep kostum yang memperkuat identitas dan kepribadian masing-masing tokoh. Bahan-bahan dipilih sesuai dengan tema dan estetika yang diinginkan. Mereka mempertimbangkan faktor-faktor seperti kenyamanan bagi para penari, daya tahan, dan kemampuan untuk mengekspresikan gerakan tubuh dengan leluasa.

Setelah desain dan bahan diputuskan, proses pembuatan dimulai dengan teliti. Mulai dari pemotongan bahan, jahitan tangan, hingga detail-detail kecil seperti hiasan dan aksesoris, semuanya dikerjakan dengan penuh dedikasi. Kolaborasi antara dosen Prodi Desain Mode dan Desain Komunikasi Visual memastikan bahwa setiap kostum tidak hanya mencerminkan keindahan visual, tetapi juga menyampaikan narasi yang kuat.

“Proses kreatif pembuatan kostum untuk ‘Cupak Gerantang Anglanglang Dharma’ telah menjadi perjalanan yang penuh inspirasi bagi kami. Kami berusaha menciptakan kostum yang tidak hanya memperindah penampilan visual, tetapi juga menggambarkan karakter dan makna mendalam dari setiap tokoh dalam sendratari tersebut,” ujar dosen kelahiran 1 Maret 1968 ini. Indonesian Institute of the Arts (ISI) Denpasar-Bali held the Bhakti Widya Kahuripan “Cupak Gerantang Anglanglang Dharma” at Pura Pasar Agung, Batur Village, Kintamani District, Bangli Regency, Sunday, March 3, 2024, evening.

The composition of the Karawitan Study Program, Faculty of Performing Arts, ISI Denpasar, became the main accompaniment in the dance drama “Cupak Gerantang Anglanglang Dharma”. Not only that, the Balinese gamelan also complemented the performance by accompanying the Kakuwung War Dance and Rejang Sadhyang Ulu Rani, and presenting Tabuh Kebyar Dang Citta Utsawa and Tabuh Gambang Suling as the opening acts.

This monumental and harmonious traditional Balinese music piece was composed by three prominent lecturers from the Faculty of Performing Arts, ISI Denpasar, namely Dean Dr. I Ketut Garwa, Coordinator of the Karawitan Arts Study Program I Nyoman Kariasa, M.Sn., and Head of the Performing Arts Education Study Program Laboratory, I Wayan Diana, S.Sn., M.Sn.

According to the Coordinator of the Karawitan Arts Study Program I Nyoman Kariasa, M.Sn., the composition of the percussion for the Bhakti Widya Kahuripan performance has been prepared and practiced with students for 2 months, starting from January 2024. A total of 24 percussionists contributed to perfecting this work. They consisted of 4 lecturers, 3 educational staff, and 17 students of the Karawitan Arts Study Program.

“This composition is a form of realization of the learning outcomes that students of Karawitan Study Program have obtained and demonstrates their dedication to the rich values and beauty of traditional Balinese art,” he said.

Nyoman Kariasa hopes that this performance will not only enrich the local community’s artistic insight but also serve as tangible evidence of the sustainability of Bali’s cultural heritage that needs to be preserved and appreciated by younger generations. “With the spirit of Bhakti Widya Kahuripan, ISI Denpasar continues to play an active role in preserving and developing traditional arts as an integral part of Indonesia’s cultural identity,” he said.
